Projects of Dixie State College PBL
Dixie State College sponsors several clubs and student organizations on campus. One of these clubs is PBL. PBL encourages students to become involved in service oriented projects around the campus, the community, and the world. PBL also loves to involve local civic leaders and local business representatives through various means; such as tours, keynote speakers, and more.
Below are a few of the projects which PBL has been involved:
Local Service - Special Needs Carnival and Campus to Community
Special Needs Carnival
The Special Needs Carnival is a huge tradition at Dixie State College to get all students involved with the special needs children in the community. It unites families and gives them an opportunity to get out and have a great time. Everyone comes dressed in their Halloween costumes to enjoy games, treats, and contests. Both the students and the children involved have a great time. Dixie State College PBL sets up a booth each year with games for all participants to enjoy.
Campus to Community
Campus to Community gives all student organizations at Dixie State College the opportunity to get out and become involved with service in the community and participate in beautifying the city of St. George and surrounding areas. Members of Dixie State PBL participated in this years Campus to Community, where several students and organizations participated in setting up Christmas lights at the Tuachan Center for the Arts and helped "clean-up" other various objects on Tuachan's campus.
Service Abroad - Project Awakening
Project Awakening*
FBLA-PBL, a Dixie State College Business Club, in October of 2008 announced Project Awakening, a collaboration with Universidad Technologica Indoamerica, of Ecuador. This project was an endeavor to help Ecuadorian students achieve one main goal: a better education.
Students of the Universidad Technologica Indoamerica completed a study that focused on the "Felix Granja" school. This was a typical rural school lacking in teaching and technology materials. Academic performance of students there had been poor. Not only had students underperformed comparatively to peers with technology access, but, they also showed lower self esteem and accented societal bias towards them. As a result, few of these students were successful in the labor market, or in higher education. In turn, this created a variety of social problems including emigration.
Dixie State College's chapter of the PBL Club committed to help our Ecuadorian counterparts. Computer technology was to be introduced to needy schools in the rural areas of Ecuador. The Dixie College local chapter began recycling and refurbishing computers for the intent of sending them to Ecuador. Additionally, a delegation of Dixie State College PBL student members spent a week in Ecuador. There, they met Ecuadorian team members, providing support and visiting some of the communities that were benefiting from the project.
